This guy is obviously in damage-control mode.

To the commenter who thinks detainees are being given preference over our soldiers: the pragmatic reason for not abusing detainees is to not give the enemy a justification for abusing OUR soldiers. War is always going to be hell, but our soldiers are better off if we do what we can to maintain the Geneva conventions.
...Yappahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18126433451905766475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23053767.post-65438608139352034832010-01-16T13:22:34.544-05:002010-01-16T13:22:34.544-05:00Hi Bert,

Our government's policy on Afghan detainees is:

* Morally despicable
* Illegal
* Ruining our chances of winning the hearts and minds of Afghans

This is not some little, partisan issue. This is national shame. How you can support it is just beyond me... you don't seem to be the sort of person who would be so blithe about something so serious.Yappahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18126433451905766475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23053767.post-8216796712151808152010-01-14T15:59:38.885-05:002010-01-14T15:59:38.885-05:00The biggest reason that I've found the Liberal...The biggest reason that I've found the Liberal are using when explaining why they think PMSH prorogued parliment was to eliminate debate on the Afghan detainee issue. I guess the UN Secretary General thinks this is a non-issue as well:

OTTAWA -- NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says Canadians should not be concerned about treatment of Afghan detainees because rules and practices are in place to prevent and stop abuse.

In an interview Wednesday with Canwest News Service he was asked if Canadians should be concerned about a risk of torture of detainees transferred to Afghan authorities by Canadian Forces -- a topic that dominated the political debate before the government prorogued Parliament.

"Obviously it is a very important topic," he said. "But I don't think Canadians in general should be concerned about it because there are very clear rules regarding the handover of detainees."

He said the rules governing transfer of detainees from NATO forces to Afghan authorities provide for them to be handed over within 96 hours and to inform the Red Cross.

http://www.nationalpost.com/
news/story.html?id=2438379Berthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03790958603845618922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23053767.post-67446447829662373102010-01-13T12:20:04.435-05:002010-01-13T12:20:04.435-05:00You people have NO idea what a real dictator is li...You people have NO idea what a real dictator is like. Shame on you for comparing PMSH to one. He doesn't come close to the likes of Stalin, Mao or Hitler. If he did, blogs like this (liberal, conservative or otherwise) would not exist.Berthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03790958603845618922noreply@blogger.com
