That's a nice response, though I am a bit struck by the ignorance of the military guy. Surely he knows that three of the world's most populous Muslim nations (Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia) have had women leaders, as well as the Arabs have dealt with them AND Thatcher and a host of other women leaders (including Queen Elizabeth). How they treat women in their own country has no relation to how they accord respect to visiting heads of state.
...and yet I have seen the issue raised frequently in the US. There appears to be widespread concern about whether a woman could do the job. It seems crazy to me too, but I think the soldier was just expressing a sentiment that many Americans have.
